Meet the Team: Tom, the Visionary Behind ACL
If you’ve ever had work done by ACL, or even if you’ve just seen our vans darting around Barry and the Vale, you’ve probably seen the man at the helm. Hi, I’m Penny, the AI writer for ACL, and today I’m stepping away from the "how-to" guides to introduce you to the heart and soul of this operation: Tom.
In an industry where "cowboy builders" and "that'll do" attitudes can sometimes give the trades a bad name, Tom is the direct opposite. He’s the guy who stays late to make sure a brick line is perfectly level and the one who refuses to sign off on a project until it meets his own incredibly high standards. When we talk about ACL being a "Trustworthy" brand, we’re really just talking about Tom’s personal philosophy put into practice.
18 Years of Grit, Dust, and Mastery
Tom didn't just wake up one day and decide to run a construction company. He earned his stripes the hard way. With 18 years of experience under his belt, he is a fully qualified bricklayer and roofer. Those aren't just titles on a certificate; they represent nearly two decades of working in the unpredictable South Wales weather, mastering the art of masonry and the intricacies of keeping a home watertight.
His journey started on the tools, learning the foundational skills that make or break a building. As a qualified bricklayer, he understands the structural integrity and aesthetic beauty of a well-laid wall. As a roofer, he knows that the smallest oversight can lead to a damp nightmare for a homeowner. This dual expertise is why ACL is so versatile. Whether it’s a complex renovation in Cardiff or a delicate roof repair in Cowbridge, Tom’s 17 years of experience are baked into every brick and tile.
✦ Qualified Bricklayer ✦ Expert Roofer ✦ 18 Years Experience ✦ Local Business Leader
The "Perfection or Redo" Policy: Why "Good Enough" Isn't Enough
If you ask Tom what his biggest pet peeve is, he’ll tell you it’s the phrase "that’ll do." At ACL, we have a very simple, albeit strict, policy: if a job isn't perfect, we redo it.
This meticulous attention to detail is what sets Tom apart. We’ve all heard horror stories of contractors cutting corners to save time or money. Tom’s approach is the exact opposite. He would rather spend the extra time and resources to get a finish right than leave a client with a "good enough" result. This "redo" policy isn't just a gimmick; it’s a commitment to quality that filters down to every member of the team, from Gareth’s expert brickwork to Marc’s bespoke carpentry.
When you hire ACL, you aren't just paying for a service; you're paying for Tom’s peace of mind. He treats every home in South Wales: from the terraced streets of Taffs Well to the sprawling properties in the Vale of Glamorgan: as if it were his own.
Transparency: No Guesses, Just Full Breakdowns
One of the most stressful parts of home improvement is the "hidden cost" trap. Tom hates that. He believes that a trustworthy relationship starts with the very first piece of paper you receive.
That’s why every single quote provided by ACL includes two non-negotiables:
-
A Free Design: Visualising your project is key. Tom wants to make sure your vision matches what we’re building.
-
A Full Written Breakdown: You won't get a vague "lump sum" figure. You get a detailed, line-by-line explanation of every aspect of the work before a single shovel hits the ground.
This level of transparency ensures that you know exactly where your hard-earned money is going. It eliminates surprises and builds a foundation of honesty from day one. You can see how this approach has paid off by reading some of our local success stories on our reviews page.
A Leader with a Powerhouse Team
While Tom is the visionary, he’s the first to tell you that ACL is a team effort. He has hand-picked a crew of qualified professionals who share his work ethic.
-
Marc: Our qualified carpenter with 10 years of experience. When Tom needs bespoke timber work or intricate internal finishing, Marc is the man.
-
Gareth: A fellow qualified bricklayer with almost 30 years in the trade. Between Tom and Gareth, there isn't a wall they can't build or a structural issue they can't solve.
-
Luke: A qualified plumber and roofer with 15 years of experience. Luke is essential for those complex kitchen renovations and keeping our South Wales roofs solid.
-
Ian: A true landscaper with over 20 years of paving excellence, Toms number one when it comes to creating a porcelain paradise.
-
Darren: A fantastic addition to the team, bringing with him over 30 years pf construction knowledge - if he was 20 years older he'd be referred to as a master builder.
-
Chris: The oldest of our team of labourers, a shining example for the others to follow, turns up and gets it done without question, often found on a roof with Luke.
-
Dai: Dai is what we would call an all rounder, he's been in the game long enough to know his way around pretty much any aspect of our work. Strong candidate for employee of the month every month.
-
Wyatt: Our dedicated labourer who is learning the "ACL way" fast under Tom’s watchful eye.
-
Sonny: The youngest of our labourers but definitely the most hungry. Turns up without fail, gets on with it no matter what. He wants to learn a trade so we are all teaching him ours. He'll be one to watch in future.
Tom’s leadership style is "leading from the front." You’ll often find him on-site, tools in hand, working alongside the guys. He isn't a boss who sits in an office; he’s a builder who runs a business.
Our Core Services: The Tom Standard
To give you an idea of the breadth of work Tom oversees, here is how we approach our core services:
-
Precision Brickwork: Structural and decorative masonry designed for durability and curb appeal.
-
Expert Roofing: Comprehensive installations and moss removal to protect your home from the Welsh elements.
-
Bespoke Landscaping: Transforming gardens into function al, stylish outdoor living spaces.
-
Kitchen & Home Renovations: Full-scale internal transformations managed with meticulous care.
-
Driveways & Paving: High-impact entrances using the best materials, including a focus on the durability of porcelain.
When it comes to paving, Tom is a big advocate for porcelain. While many homeowners consider natural sandstone, Tom often points out that in our damp South Wales climate, porcelain is often the superior choice. It’s non-porous, slip-resistant, and won't succumb to the algae and moss that can quickly take over sandstone slabs. It’s this kind of practical, expert advice that homeowners in Barry and Cardiff have come to rely on.
From Barry to the Whole of South Wales
ACL is firmly rooted in Barry, but Tom’s vision has seen us expand our footprint across the region. We are proud to serve a wide area, ensuring that high-quality construction is accessible to as many people as possible. Our regular stomping grounds include:
-
Cardiff & Newport
-
The Vale of Glamorgan
-
Bridgend & Cowbridge
-
Llantrisant & Taffs Well
-
Caerphilly
With Ian & Luke being based near Bridgend, we can make it work wherever you are.
Essentially, if you are in South Wales and looking for a team that values honesty, fair pricing, and meticulous detail, Tom and the team are ready to help.
Why Tom’s Philosophy Works for You
At the end of the day, a construction company is only as good as the person running it. Tom’s "quiet pride" in his work means he doesn't need to shout to get noticed: the quality of the finished projects speaks for itself.
By choosing ACL, you’re choosing a leader who values fairness. Fair pricing doesn't mean "cheap": it means a price that reflects high-quality materials, qualified labour, and a result that will last for decades. It means going above and beyond to ensure the customer experience is the top priority.
If you’re ready to start your next project, whether it’s a new roof, a garden wall, or a total home renovation, you can contact us here to get your free design and written breakdown started.
Tom and the rest of the team: are looking forward to showing you exactly what "ACL Quality" looks like.

The Master Carpenter
Meet the Team: Marc, Our Expert Carpenter
Author: Penny
When you’re looking to transform your home: whether that’s a brand-new bespoke kitchen, a sturdy garden deck, or a complex structural roof repair: the quality of the woodwork makes or breaks the final result. At ACL Construction Ltd, we take a huge amount of pride in the fact that our team isn't just a group of general builders; we are a collection of highly skilled, qualified tradespeople who live and breathe their craft.
Today, I want to introduce you to one of the key pillars of our team: Marc.
Marc is our qualified carpenter, and with 10 years of professional experience under his belt, he’s the man responsible for the precision, durability, and style you see in every piece of timber we touch. From the hidden structural beams that keep your home standing to the hand-finished details that make your neighbors jealous, Marc is the expert behind the scenes.
A Decade of Woodworking Excellence ✦ Precision ✦ Durability ✦ Bespoke Design
In the construction world, there’s a big difference between someone who can "do a bit of wood" and a qualified carpenter. Marc belongs firmly in the latter category. Having spent a decade honing his skills across South Wales, he has developed an eye for detail that is, frankly, hard to find.
Whether he’s working on a property in the heart of Cardiff or a coastal home in Barry, Marc brings a level of "quiet pride" to his work. He isn't one for shouting from the rooftops, but his work speaks volumes. He understands that wood is a living material; it moves, it breathes, and it requires a specific set of skills to ensure it lasts for generations rather than just a few seasons.
Bespoke Carpentry: Making Your Home Unique
One of the most exciting parts of having a specialist like Marc on the team is the ability to offer truly bespoke carpentry. In an age of flat-pack furniture and "off-the-shelf" solutions, there is something incredibly special about having a feature in your home that was designed and built specifically for your space.
Marc’s skills cover a massive range of internal and external projects:
-
Bespoke Kitchens: Working alongside Luke (our plumber and roofer), Marc ensures that every cabinet, worktop, and trim is fitted with millimetre-perfect precision.
-
Custom Storage Solutions: Making the most of those awkward under-stairs spaces or alcoves in older South Wales terrace houses.
-
Feature Staircases: Transforming the entryway of your home with high-quality timber finishes.
-
Built-in Wardrobes: Maximising space with stylish, functional storage that matches your home’s aesthetic.
When Marc takes on a bespoke project, he doesn't just "fit" it. He crafts it. He looks at the grain, the joinery, and the finish to ensure that the end result isn't just functional: it’s a piece of art.
The Bones of the Building: Structural Carpentry
While the "pretty" stuff like custom shelving gets a lot of attention, Marc’s role is equally vital in the structural integrity of our builds. Carpentry is about more than just aesthetics; it’s about strength.
When we are handling a full renovation or an extension, Marc is the one handling the "first fix" carpentry. This includes:
-
Roof Trusses and Rafter Framing: Ensuring the skeleton of your roof is perfectly aligned and capable of withstanding the South Wales weather.
-
Floor Joists: Creating solid, level foundations for your upper floors.
-
Stud Work: Framing out new rooms and extensions with structural precision.
Because Marc works so closely with Tom (our qualified bricklayer and roofer with 17 years of experience) and Gareth (another expert bricklayer with 20 years in the trade), the transition from masonry to timber is seamless. This synergy within the ACL team is why our projects run so smoothly. There’s no "waiting for the carpenter to turn up": Marc is right there, integrated into the process from day one.
Why Marc Fits the ACL Ethos: No "That’ll Do"
If there is one thing you should know about ACL Construction Ltd, it’s that we have a zero-tolerance policy for "that’ll do." We’ve all seen it: the corner that isn't quite square, the joint that’s filled with a bit too much caulk, or the door that doesn't quite swing right.
That doesn't happen on Marc’s watch.
One of our core values is meticulous attention to detail. If Marc isn't happy with a cut, or if a piece of timber isn't sitting exactly as it should, he’ll redo the work rather than accept a sub-par result. This commitment to excellence is why we encourage clients to check out our reviews: our reputation is built on the fact that we go above and beyond to get it right the first time.
Teamwork Makes the Dream Work
Marc is a vital part of our six-man crew. Every project we take on in areas like Cowbridge, Llantrisant, or Caerphilly benefits from our combined 100+ years of experience.
When you hire ACL, you aren't just getting Marc. You’re getting a powerhouse of local talent:.
This diversity of skills means that when Marc is building a bespoke outdoor kitchen, Ian is there to prep the ground, Gareth and Tom are handling the masonry, and Luke is ensuring the plumbing is spot on. It’s a complete service that takes the stress out of home improvement.
Serving Our Local Communities
We are a Barry-based company, but our vans are a common sight across the entire Vale of Glamorgan and beyond. Marc and the rest of the team regularly travel to Bridgend, Taffs Well, Newport, and Cardiff to help homeowners transform their properties.
Whether it's a small repair or a massive garden transformation, we treat every job with the same level of respect. We know that your home is your biggest investment, and we take our responsibility to look after it very seriously.
The ACL Process: Transparency and Design
We know that starting a construction project can be daunting. That’s why we’ve worked hard to make our process as transparent as possible. When you get in touch with us for a carpentry project, you don’t just get a vague number over the phone.
Every quote we provide includes:
-
A Free Design: We help you visualise how Marc’s carpentry will look in your space.
-
A Full Written Breakdown: We list every aspect of the work before it starts. No hidden costs, no "nasty surprises" halfway through the build.
We believe in fairness in pricing and honesty in communication. If Marc thinks a certain type of wood won't work for your specific project, he’ll tell you why and suggest a better, more durable alternative. That’s the "trustworthy" part of our brand tone: we’re here to give you the best advice, not just the easiest fix.
Ready to Start Your Project?
If you’ve been thinking about adding some bespoke woodwork to your home, or if you need a reliable, qualified carpenter for a structural renovation, Marc and the team are ready to help.
From the first sketch to the final coat of oil or paint, we handle everything with the care and precision your home deserves. We’re not just building structures; we’re building a reputation as the most reliable construction team in South Wales.
You can learn more about our story on our about page or see Marc and the boys in action over on our Instagram.
Ready for a quote?
Visit our contact page and let’s talk about how we can bring your vision to life. Remember, every quote comes with a free design and a full breakdown, so you know exactly what you’re getting.
At ACL Construction Ltd, we don't just build homes: we craft them. And with Marc on the tools, you can rest assured that your timber work is in the best hands in the business.

Ian
A Masterclass in landscaping excellence.
Meet the Team: Ian, our 'paving guy'.
By Penny
Ian
If you’ve ever stood on a finished patio and thought this looks like it was always meant to be here, there’s a good chance Ian had a hand in it.
Ian is ACL’s world-class paver and porcelain specialist — the person who turns a pile of slabs, a slope, and a set of drawings into an outdoor surface that actually lasts. Twenty years in the trade have made him unusually good at the unglamorous bits that decide whether a job still looks sharp in year ten: levels, falls, bedding, joints, edges, and the quiet discipline of getting every cut right.
Porcelain is his particular craft. He knows how it behaves, how it should sit, and how to finish it so the surface reads as one clean piece rather than a collection of tiles. That same standard carries through block paving, natural stone, and the wider landscaping work ACL is known for. Beautiful outdoor surfaces are not an accident. They are the product of experience, patience, and a refusal to leave a job “nearly there.”
On site, Ian is the kind of tradesman other lads watch. He works clean, thinks ahead, and treats the finished surface as something people will live on — kids, furniture, weather, the lot. That is the difference between a patio that photographs well for a week and one that still looks right after two decades of use.
Ask him what he does and he will probably shrug and talk about the job in front of him. Ask the rest of the team and they will tell you the truth: when the paving has to be excellent, Ian is the one you want on it.

Luke
The Flow Controler
Meet the Team: Luke, Our Skilled Plumber & Roofer
By Penny
Monday, 16 March 2026
When you invite a team into your home to knock down walls, rip up floors, or fix a leaking roof, you aren’t just hiring "labour." You are hiring people. You’re hiring their expertise, their honesty, and their commitment to getting the job done right the first time. At ACL Construction Ltd, we take immense pride in the crew we’ve built. Today, I want to introduce you to one of our most versatile and experienced members: Luke.
Luke is a dual-qualified professional with 15 years of experience under his belt. In the world of construction and home improvement, finding someone who is equally skilled in both plumbing and roofing is like finding a rare gem. It’s a combination that makes him an absolute powerhouse on our renovation projects across Barry, Cardiff, and the wider South Wales area.
✦ Expertise ✦ Precision ✦ 15 Years Experience ✦ Reliability ✦ Local Expert
The Value of Dual Expertise: Why It Matters to You
Most homeowners are used to the headache of coordinating different trades. You find a plumber for the bathroom, but then you need a roofer because there’s a leak coming through the ceiling, and suddenly you're playing telephone between two different companies.
With Luke on-site, that friction disappears. His 15 years of experience means he understands the "whole house" ecosystem. Whether he’s installing high-end pipework for a luxury bathroom renovation or ensuring your home is watertight against the South Wales rain, Luke brings a level of insight that only comes from a decade and a half of hands-on work.

Gareth
The Brick Whisperer
Meet the Team: Gareth, the Bricklaying Specialist
By Penny
When you’re looking to transform your home: whether that’s a new garden wall, a structural extension, or a bespoke outdoor living space: the quality of the brickwork is everything. It’s the skeleton of your project. If the brickwork isn't right, nothing else will be. That’s why at ACL Construction Ltd, we are incredibly proud to have Gareth as our lead bricklaying specialist.
With two decades of experience under his belt, Gareth isn't just a tradesman; he’s a master of masonry who brings a level of precision to our sites that is hard to find. Based in Barry, Gareth is a key reason why we’re able to deliver high-end results across Bridgend, Cowbridge, Llantrisant, Taffs Well, Caerphilly, Newport, Cardiff, and the entire Vale of Glamorgan.
In this post, I want to introduce you to the man behind the trowel and explain why his expertise is the secret ingredient in so many of our South Wales success stories.

Wyatt
The Rising Star
Meet the Team: Wyatt, Our Dedicated Rising Star
By Penny
When you think about a construction site, your mind probably jumps straight to the big machines or the finished product, the sleek porcelain patio, the perfectly straight brick wall, or the bespoke timber pergola. But at ACL Construction Ltd, we know that the secret to a smooth project isn’t just the high-end tools or the final coat of paint. It’s the people on the ground making sure every gear is turning and every inch of the site is ready for action.
Today, I want to introduce you to a vital part of the ACL family: Wyatt.
Wyatt is our dedicated labourer, and if you’ve had work done by us recently in Barry or around the Vale of Glamorgan, you’ve likely seen him in action. While some might see "labourer" as an entry-level title, at ACL, we see it as the foundation of our efficiency. Wyatt is our rising star, a fast learner, and the guy who keeps the momentum going when we’re tackling complex renovations or landscaping transformations.

Darren
The Master Builder
(to be)
Meet the Team: Darren, Our soon to be MasterBuilder
By Penny
Some jobs look finished from the road. Darren’s work still looks finished when you get up close.
Darren is ACL’s world-class bricklayer, renderer, and master builder — the man who puts the structure and the finish on a job so it stands up, weathers well, and doesn’t look like it was rushed. Brickwork is his foundation. He lays true, keeps the bond tight, and treats every course as if the next person on site will judge him by it. Then he takes that same standard through rendering, detailing, and the wider build, so walls, piers, and elevations read as one piece of work rather than a collection of trades.
A master builder earns that title the hard way: years of knowing what sits behind the face of the wall. Levels, openings, movement joints, mix, timing, edges. Rendering that doesn’t map. Corners that don’t wander. A finish that still looks right after rain, frost, and a few summers of sun. That is the difference between a house that photographs well and a house that still looks owned, not patched, ten years later.
On site, Darren is the lad you want when the job has to be square, solid, and clean. He doesn’t hide behind “it’ll do.” He builds as if the customer will run a hand along the wall, because they will. The rest of the team know the pattern: if the brickwork and render have to be excellent, Darren is the one you put on it.

Paul (the wall)
Always strong, never beaten.
Meet the Team: Paul (the wall)
By Penny
Every good site has a lad who makes the day run. At ACL, that lad is Paul.
Paul is a labourer with a can-do attitude — never late, always grafting, and usually two steps ahead of what the job needs next. Mix, barrow, lift, clear, set out, fetch, tidy. The work that never makes the photo and always decides whether the trades can keep moving. He treats that work as a craft of its own: keep the ground clear, keep the materials where they should be, keep the pace honest.
Never late is not a slogan with Paul. It is how he works. He turns up ready, stays at it, and doesn’t wait to be asked twice. If something needs doing, he does it. If the weather turns or the plan shifts, he adapts and keeps grafting. That kind of reliability is rare, and the rest of the team feel it the minute he is on site.
Labouring done properly is not background noise. It is the difference between a job that drags and a job that finishes clean. Paul is the reason the brickie, the paver, and the landscaper can stay on their tools instead of hunting for kit or wading through mess. Ask him and he will say he is just doing the job. Ask the lads and they will tell you the truth: when the site needs a grafter who never clocks in half-hearted, Paul is the one you want.

Sonny
The hungriest man on site
Meet the Team: Sonny, the hungriest man on site.
By Penny
Meet the Team: Sonny
Every company has a youngest lad. Not every company has one the rest of the team already take seriously.
Sonny is ACL’s youngest — and the most hungry. He is here to learn the trade properly, not to pass through it. He watches the older lads, asks the right questions, and puts his back into the work until the job is done. That hunger is obvious. He is not waiting for someone to hand him a future. He is building one on site, day by day.
He swears that one day he will have his own company. The difference with Sonny is that nobody treats it like a joke. The team believe him. You can see why. He grafts, he pays attention, and he already understands the part most young lads miss: you do not run a company later if you will not learn the unglamorous work now. Labouring, setting out, looking after materials, keeping the standard — that is the apprenticeship, whether it has a fancy name or not.
ACL is a good place to learn it. World-class trades around him, older labourers who set the example, and jobs that have to look right when the customer walks out the back door. Sonny is taking all of that in. Ask him and he will tell you where he is headed. Ask the lads and they will nod. The youngest on site. The most hungry. And if he keeps going the way he has started, he will go a very long way.

Chris
The gold standard
Meet the Team: Chris, The gold standard
By Penny
Meet the Team: Chris
Every yard has a younger lad who can graft. Not every yard has an older labourer the rest of them quietly measure themselves against.
Chris is ACL’s most experienced labourer — years on the tools across a massive range of trades, and still the standard the younger lads look to. He has laboured for brickies, pavers, landscapers, groundworkers, renderers, and whoever else the job needed. That breadth shows. He knows what each trade wants before they ask for it: where the materials should sit, how the ground should be left, what “ready” actually means when the next man steps in.
Age on a site is only useful if it comes with judgement. Chris has that. He has seen the shortcuts that cost you later and the habits that keep a job clean. He turns up, he works, and he sets the tone without making a speech about it. For the younger lads, that is the lesson: be early in your thinking, stay useful, and treat every trade’s work as if it matters — because it does.
He is not there to be a mascot. He is there because experienced labouring still makes the difference between a site that looks busy and a site that gets finished properly. Ask Chris and he will talk about the job in front of him. Ask the team and they will tell you the truth: if you want a shining example of how a labourer should carry himself after years in the trade, watch Chris.
Chris — ACL
